When you need this: Check my network reports that the router refused to open a port, or that no router answered.
Opening a port makes you reachable over IPv4, also for friends without IPv6. Many calls work without it (see How calls connect), but it's the most effective single setting.
Steps
- In Tact-VC, turn on Settings → Network → Open port on my router (UPnP / NAT-PMP). It's off by default.
- Open your router's web interface. Its address is printed on the router or in its manual, often
192.168.0.1,192.168.1.1,fritz.boxorrouter.home. - Find the setting for automatic port opening. Routers name it differently, for example UPnP, NAT-PMP, PCP, allow independent port sharing for this device or allow devices to open ports automatically. It's usually under Internet, NAT, Port forwarding / Port sharing, Network or Advanced.
- Turn it on. Some routers need this per device: select your computer, not only the general switch.
- Restart Tact-VC.
Check it worked
Run Check my network again. Port opened passes and shows your public address.
Still not working
- Your router has no such setting, or you'd rather not use it: forward the port by hand, see Port forwarding.
- Public IPv4 warns about CGNAT: opening ports can't help, see Shared internet address.
